Ben O’Callaghan

Sustainable Development and Design Leader, Gold Coast

Ben is one of Australia’s leading sustainable design professionals, most recently with over 15 years of experience in the property sector. His unique combination of academic qualifications and practical construction and sustainable development experience, have enabled him to contribute to over 50 leading sustainability-focused projects in Australia.

This year Ben also founded a new company with partners called Smart Urban Villages to disrupt and revolutionise the way housing is delivered, and operated, in Australia; by providing perpetual leases they will facilitate higher quality of life, without mortgages and also integrate a range of high quality shared services and facilities.

Ben’s experiences include:

  • Working in a team to deliver The Ecovillage at Currumbin Gold Coast, Queensland. This intentional community is the most awarded estate in Australia with 33 awards! This included “The World’s Best Environmental Development” (FIABCI Prix D’Excellence Award).
  • Bond University, JCU and QUT education sector sustainable design appointments.
  • Canberra Cohousing Association (2002-2005).
  • Director of Neco (2006-2008) generating over 1,000,000 tonnes of CO2-e credits through direct-action retrofit programs.
  • Queensland State Manager for Cundall, a niche international sustainability and engineering consultancy.

Ben also developed his own HIA Energy Efficiency Award Winning house Yagoi100 in 2009; so uniquely, Ben has designed a sustainable house, lives in a sustainable house and lives inside an international award winning Sustainable Community. This combined with his commercial, education experiences and academic qualifications makes him a leader in sustainable design in Australia.
